Peristaltic pump Functional requirements:

Basic requirements

· The pump must be configurable to be either 3, 4 or 5 channel.

· The pump must have sufficient rollers to meet the requirements of the expansion/compression of the tube, but not less than 8.

· The rotor diameter must be between 50mm and 70mm diameter.

Tube requirements

The range of tubes the Peristaltic pump must be able to operate with is as follows:

· Black/Black,

· Orange/Orange

· White/white,

· Red/Red

· Grey/Grey

· Yellow/Yellow

· Yellow/Blue

· Blue/Blue

· Green/Green

· Purple/Purple

· Purple/Black

Tube material to be used with the pump is as follows:

· STD PVC

· Marprene

· Viton

· Solvent Yellow (mod PVC)

Wall thickness of tubes to be compatible with the pump:

· 0.85-0.90mm

The pump design must be such that PVC Grey/grey tube running at 15rpm constantly should last 1 week.

Presser Arm requirements

· The pump presser arms must be optimized to operate with minimal pulsation on White/White & Grey/Grey tubes.

· Expansion of these tubes must be over 2 rollers.

· Compression of tubes must be gradual over 1 full roller pitch, without sharp transitions.

· Shape of expansion zone of the presser arms must be optimized to provide for constant volume change in the optimized tube over the 2 expansion rollers.

· Presser arms must be clamped independently, so that individual channels may be switched off.

· Clamps must be designed such that presser arms can be clamped & unclamped in a single handed operation

· When unclamped, the presser arm must fall away from the rotor.

· When unclamped, the gap between the presser arm and the rotor must be not less than 10mm at the pivot point, and not less than 30mm at the clamp end.

· Not withstanding the above 2 requirements, it must be possible to thread a tube around the drum past the presser arm closest to the drive motor, whilst the outer channels are all clamped.

· Presser arms must have a feature that ensures the tube is not able to migrate off the track of the arm.

· Clamping mechanism must have provision for operator adjustment.

Tube Holding

· Tube holders must be provided which are a simple drop in type, capable of accepting all the tubes listed above.

· Tube holders must be designed such that the tube does not drop out of the holder if the tube stretches.

Flow requirements

Normal operation will be 12-15rpm (approx 1.25ml/min on the breadboard). Pump must run at up to 50rpm.

· Pulsation: See presser arm requirements for pulsation requirements.

Motor specifications

· The motor must be a 2 phase stepper motor.

· The motor must be capable of delivering sufficient torque to drive 5 channels of all tube material types, over the full temperature range and speed range.

Temperature range

5-45ºC from sea level to 3000m

5-35ºC from 3000-4500m.

Volumes

· Initially volumes of 250 per annum are anticipated, growing to 500 after 2-3 years.
